How Do You Like Them Apples?

My mom always used to say in her fiery Dominican accent, "There are no shortcuts in life!" The thing is, I tried to make caramel from scratch but it kept on burning and no matter what I did I just couldn't get the right consistency. The problem was, and still is--I don't have a good recipe.

So I headed to the local Stop and Shop and picked up the high fructose corn syrup filled Kraft caramels and then spotted a box of Reese's Pieces on my way out. Hey, if you can't beat 'em...

I was assisted in unwrapping each individual Kraft caramel (a total of four bags) and the process began. Process? Ha, unwrapping them was the process. To my sweet little squares I added a splash of milk and stirred consistently on high heat. I tested it, pouring a drop into icy cold water, making sure it had the chew I had been craving all fall long. Eventually I had the perfect semi-homemade coating for sticky, delicious, caramel apples.

Sweet.

Sticky.

Scrumptious.

So I'm challenging all of you out there, reading my blog, to find a caramel recipe (from scratch) that works and tastes amazing. The winner will get their recipe posted and significant praise and photographs once the recipe is tested. Anyone up for it?

Happy Halloween!
